NCWIT Aspirations in Computing

The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) sponsors the annual Aspirations in Computing Award competition for high school women involved in and/or interested in technology and computing. You do not necessarily have to have achievements in technology to apply, you just have to have the passion – hence the “aspirations” name! Applications open on September 18.

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing recognizes young women in high school for their computing-related achievements and interests and generates visibility for women’s participation in computing-related pursuits.  With one application, high school girls will be considered for the award on both the national and the affiliate levels.

Competition for the 2014 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing is open to any U.S. high-school-level female (grades 9-12). Applications are being accepted now through 11:59 PM ET on October 31, 2013. Applications are online at www.aspirations.org. Winners will be announced in early December 2013.

$500 in cash

ATTENTION EDUCATORS
In addition to identifying a pool of talented young women, the Aspirations in Computing also identifies outstanding educators who play a pivotal role in helping encourage the young women to explore their interests in computing and technology. The NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Educator Award recognizes educators for their efforts to promote gender equity in computing. The awardees are selected from the educators who are engaged in endorsing Aspirations Award applications. Each awardee is eligible to receive up to $1,000 in reimbursement for participation in a computing-related professional development opportunity as well as being recognized publicly at the award ceremony. There is no application process for the award. To be considered for the Educator Award all you need to do is to encourage your students to apply for the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing and endorse their application.  Teachers, counselors, mentors, coaches, program leaders, library specialists and essentially anyone engaged in the education and support of young people is eligible.

And, please help us to promote this directly to girls and to your networks – both personal and professional.  We have informational posters that you can print out to hang and to share (or request quantities from aspirations@ncwit.org). Also, see the Award Info Sheet for all the fine print.

This is one of those opportunities in life to have an impact on a young woman; by encouraging her application, you can help her to see and realize her potential!

If you have any questions about the award please contact aspirations@ncwit.org.

Aspirations in Computing is sponsored nationally by AT&T, Bank of America, Bloomberg, & Microsoft.
